Frequently Asked Questions - ArtWebsite

Important Updates:

ArtSite Windows users... Due to the increased security in Internet Explorer 7, you will need to add ArtSite to your trusted sites:

In Internet Explorer 7, choose 'Internet Options' from the 'Tools' drop down menu.
Click the 'Security' tab.
Click 'Trusted Sites' and then click the 'Sites' button.
Click to remove the check next to "Require server verification..."
Type 'http://localhost' under "Add this website to the zone." Click the 'Add' button.
Click the 'Close' button and then the 'OK' button.

ArtSite Mac users... Every now and then it is a good idea to click the 'Database Update' left border link to back up your system database to the artsite.sql file.

Check the ArtSite folder permissions: ------------------->
If the ArtSite folder does not have the correct permissions, the artsite.sql file cannot be backed up. While ArtSite ships with the correct permissions, it is a good idea to double check the folder before you do a backup:

The ArtSite folder is located in the Library -> Webserver -> Documents folder.

Click the ArtSite folder.
Go to the 'File' menu and choose 'Get Info'.
Click 'Ownership and Permissions' to display the details.
Click the little lock button so that it unlocks.
The 'Owner' is most likely you. Change the 'Group' to 'staff'.
Change the 'Access' to 'Read & Write' for the Owner, Group, and Others.
Click the 'Apply to enclosed items...' button.

When the ArtSite folder permissions are correct, log in and click the 'Backup ArtSite Database' link. (If you use ArtSite Classroom or Network, log in as the Administrator.) Save a copy of the artsite.sql file and the media folder to insure that all of your work is saved.

To move your writing and images between computers or to a new computer:
Copy the artsite.sql file and the media folder to the new ArtSite folder. Check to be sure the ArtSite folder on the other has the correct permissions. Click the 'Database Update' link on the left border and then the 'Restore ArtSite Database' text link.

Frequently Asked Questions - ArtSite:

Q - How much Disk space does each ArtSite use on our computer or server?
A - ArtSite takes less than 11 MB of Hard Drive space including the beginning Museum collection of images. More space will be required as you add images to the programs. If images are reduced in size to about 400 pixels and saved for the web (72dpi), about 15 images will equal 1 MB of Hard Drive space.

Q - Can we add ArtSite to our school Internet site to share with our community?
A - No - While copyright law permits an unlimited number of images for educational purposes, ArtSite is not licensed for Internet use. . . (read more)

Q - The page images are not refreshing when I use Internet Explorer on my Mac.
A -
From the 'Explorer' menu, choose 'Preferences...'. Under 'Web Browser', choose 'Advanced'. Under 'Cache', choose 'Always'.

Q - Can I work on my ArtSite Museum from home?
A - Only if your school has remote Intranet access - meaning access to the school network. One way to work at home is to choose pages from museum web sites and simply email the pages to yourself at school. That way you can easily transfer the images and text to your ArtSite museum pages.

All of your writing is saved within the database and the images are saved in the database. You can move the database and media folder from one computer to another.

Q - Is there a way that I can display richer colors on my Mac screen?
A - From Dock, choose the Preferences Icon. Under 'Hardware', choose 'Display'. Click the "Color" tab and choose "sRGB Profile".

Q - I have the Windows version of ArtSite Classroom and just got a couple of additional computers in my classroom. When I tried to access the program from the new student computers I wasn't able to see the images.
A - The earliest version of ArtSite Classroom for Windows could not recognize the images on some small networks. Please contact us for a free upgrade.

Q - I have ArtSite Classroom installed on a Windows workgroup including 12 computers. Sometimes the students will see the following error:
" A script on this page is causing Internet Explorer to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script?" What should I do?
A - Click "No" and you probably won't see the message again. ArtSite Classroom for Windows is designed for a small workgroup. Each of the student computers go to the host computer to find the images. If you have a slower network the student computers keep trying to access the images over and over. Your web browser interprets this as a script error. If you are trying to run ArtSite Classroom on a larger classroom network, we recommend you upgrade to the Network version of ArtSite and install IIS on the host computer.

Q - I created a new ArtSite collection name. When I go to MyMuseum and choose my new collection I see a message that no record exists. How do I fill my new Collection with Museum pages?
A - Next to "No Record Exists" is an "Add" link. The "Add" link directs you to a where you can assemble a Museum page and place it in your new collection. After you have created your first page, you can choose the collection from the drop down list and add, delete, and/or change pages.
